Georgia Cancer Study

Our Mission
The Georgia Cancer Study (GCS) of Emory University is funded by the Georgia Cancer Coalition (GCC), with a goal of enrolling 140,000 residents from the State of Georgia.

The GCS Principal Investigator, Jack Mandel, PhD, MPH, Chair of Epidemiology, leads a team of investigators and staff from the Rollins School of Public Health and School of Medicine.

The GCS pilot project, in partnership with community cancer coalitions, is recruiting approximately 1,000 participants from southwest and central Georgia counties to test the methodologies, questionnaires, specimen collection, and other aspects of the study before launching a full statewide effort.

Entry criteria include 25-74 years of age, no prior diagnosis of cancer*, and being a Georgia resident. Individuals who consent to participate have their height, weight, and blood pressures recorded, and also provide blood, urine, and saliva samples to be stored for investigations of potential biomarkers. Over time, the participants complete multiple questionnaires and maintain contact with GCS investigators. The GCS will enroll a diverse cross-section of Georgia residents.

*Note: You can still participate if your previous cancer diagnosis has been limited to cervical cancer in situ that was removed in a doctor’s office with no further treatment, or basal or squamous skin cancer removed completely with surgery and no further treatment.
